NiniChic: Jeans 101

Hi Guys-

Did you all had a great 4th?  I didn’t do anything special because I am scare of the firework noises.  I’m such a chicken :) . I have not done much update on the blog for the last couple days because Loc was on a long holiday break and no one to take the photos for me :) .  Also,  I was really exhausted from working 8 days straight and finally have a day off today and tomorrow. This is what I wore to get some lunch with Loc today and I like to use these photos to talk about ” Jeans 101″.

IMG_0109

Every generation has it’s own iconic jean shape and cut. The sixties and seventies are famous for bell-bottoms, the nineties were full of baggy jeans to compliment the grunge-rock culture and the past ten years have been all about the stovepipe skinny jean, a throwback to the tapered leg of the eighties. Lately everybody is talking about the boyfriend jeans that they have to have.

This trend is not for everyone so be careful when you are out there looking for a pair of jeans. The key to buying the perfect pair is to follow three basic rules. First, jeans are best suited for everyday wear so it is super important to make sure that they fit your life style. Another issue that can cause a fashion accident is not buying age appropriate jeans. The absolute most important thing about finding the perfect pair of jeans is that they need to fit you right: choose a pair that doesn’t overshadow your body shape.

IMG_0108

A great pair of jeans compliments your body shape and is comfortable enough to breathe in. But be wary of baggy pants. The boyfriend jean is a fun addition to some outfits but when pants are too baggy, they work against your outfit and are distracting. Buy the jeans that show your silhouette and don’t hide your assets. Every body shape is different and you have to be aware of what makes yours look best. If you are petite, stay away from baggy pants especially. They will make you look shorter. On the other hand, if you are taller, take advantage of a leg-lengthening trouser pant. If you have a thicker hip, try a skinny jean but NOT a tight top. The skinny jean works best with a loose, draped cardigan or an oversized flowing tunic for someone with curves. This outfit transitions between day and night best if your top is flowing and low cut.

IMG_0107

Don’t be afraid of shopping for jeans! If you shop for jeans without confidence, you might buy a pair that is too big. But while you are busy being body conscious, buying a bigger size will actually make you look bigger. Another issue people have when sizing a pair of jeans is whether or not the pair will shrink after the first wash. Buying a bigger size just in case they do is often a bad idea because most jeans are pre-shrunk.

My favorite jean is J-brand 10″ opening inseam it has 98% cotton and 2% spandex. Any pair of jeans that have a percentage of Lycra will give a little as you wear them and conform to your body shape. The reason I love J-brand jeans is because they give you a butt if you don’t have one and if you have anything extra around the thigh area, they will suck it in for you. A pair of J-brand jeans can get the job done. I don’t wear jeans that much, but when I wear them I like to keep it clean and simple. My no-fail outfit with jeans is a form fitting tank and boyfriend blazer. The jeans show my curves and the blazer balances the outfit with structure and geometry. This balance is essential for an outfit that can transition easily between day and night.

IMG_0102

There is a pair of jeans out there that is perfect for every person with every body shape. As always, be a smart shopper, don’t be attracted to jeans just for their brand name or on sale.  Search carefully for the pair that will be your go-to weekend option.

Wearing: Comme des Garcons soccer ball jacket, Theory satin blouse, Superfine Jean, YSL booties, Givenchy bag, and Metropark sunglasses.

Happy Tuesday to everyone !!!!! xoxox Nini Nguyen

Nice outfit but honestly the pants are too tight on your thighs. I think sizing up would have been more flattering in this case.

oops hit enter too soon…and…the pants are pulling the zipper apart meaning too snug. I love your shoes tho!

    Mary :
Nice outfit but honestly the pants are too tight on your thighs. I think sizing up would have been more flattering in this case.

sizing up would be a mistake because you never want jeans to be baggy in the wrong places! mary, i wish you would share a photo of what you think is the right fit, because your advice doesn’t make much sense.

  11. July 7th, 2009 at 16:37 | #11

I love the pumps but I think the pants a little long but if you feel great and beautiful then hell why not?

Mary, I don’t think these are too tight on Nini, but of course you are entitled to your opinion.

Great post about jeans. Lately I’m all about cuffing them. Maybe it’s the heat or something!

    Hi Hi,

Totally agree with Mary on the jeans (esp. on the zipper comment). But anyhow, Nini has great style! Just my thoughts :) .

    July 7th, 2009 at 16:49 | #14

Oh – I’m not sure about sizing up…that would be too big…but maybe the fitting is just a bit off. Jeans are so tricky. Sometimes the fittings can be so different even if they are the same size, same brand, and same style.

The jean is a little pulling but I think Nini can pull it all well together with her great style. The tips are great Nini please keep them coming. I love your blog and your style.

I think these jeans fit you just perfectly. They are a nice wash that looks great on you- not a wash I could pull off very well. I agree with your advice and this makes me realize I need to buy a new pair of jeans!

  17. July 7th, 2009 at 17:23 | #17

Thanks for the advice Nini! I was browsing your tips section yesterday and the how to pose in pictures post is really helpful too.. your jeans are super nice and I super love all your Commes de Garcons pieces..=)

hi nini! me too, i don’t wear jeans so often. i find it hard to shop for jeans than any other piece of clothing. this is one item i cant shop online. i have to try them on first.

    love your orange sunglasses!

  27. July 7th, 2009 at 20:35 | #27

Great tips Nini! I love my jeans, they are basically the only type of pants I wear! I’m not sure I agree with the other commenters about the pants being too tight since I think they’re *supposed* to be that way for that type of cut, but I think they might be a bit long b/c the bottom looks a little scrunchy. However, that is a personal preference :)

  28. July 7th, 2009 at 20:46 | #28

n, a fabulous andd informative post. i would add to try on lots of brands and style irl to see what looks best.
i love jeans, but like them to look perfect. :)

The mix of satin and denim is virulently “Urban CHIC”, AND you naturally decline it on such a Dizzy way with your YSL booties . . .
ps: Mmmmh Actually about “Boyfriend jeans” I think that the better version is the “Destroy CHIC light” One, full of electrifying subtlety . . .
ps: Oooooh You’re Welcome for the “stilettostetico-esque” mention, it now belongs to me to Thank you for your kind words Nini !!!

darling this is an excellent guide to getting great flattering jeans!
I love that pair on your honey, they look custom made for you honey. how amazing do you look in the metropark sunglasses?! they look so fabulous on you honey, you look like the super star that you are :)
darling yes blogging with a full time job can be so hard my darling, how i manage it is I sometimes create posts ahead in times when i am not so busy, like the posts about the fashion finds im lusting after etc so i post those the days im too busy to do an outfit post. Also there are some days when I just too tired and so I dont post at all my sweet. So its like a fine act trying to balance work, family and blogging :) but the pre posts that i write do help a lot for the days when I have no time to sit and post.
I also love reading other bloggers blogs and comment on them and many times i have little time so what I do is I multi-task. Like if im on train on way to see a client or on the way to a shoot I catch up on blogs and commenting.
The best advice I can give is I do it when I can , there are some days I dont feel like blogging or posting comments at all so I dont,so do it when you feel my sweet ok.
    big kiss my love,
    Marian.

clearly you aren’t taking your own advice- the jeans you are wearing are a bad wash and the fit is terrible, better luck next time nini!

why such dark morbid color for summer?

  56. July 9th, 2009 at 05:12 | #56

Hi Nini! I love visiting your blog – you’ve just got such a generous spirit, write beautifully, Loc takes such beautiful shots of you, and it’s always such good food for thought. This post on jeans is a great guide. It started me thinking: I’ve just found a look I like, since childhood actually, and I think it works for me. I’m slim, my legs are proportionally long for my height (only 5′4″) and my hips/bottom are narrow, so I just like wearing straight leg, slim fit jeans. My favourite are actually from the Gap. Call me boring, but I almost think of jeans as the neutral canvas, and vary everything else.
We had a lovely 4th, thanks: we went to the seashore and, this being England, no one mentioned it. But this year especially I felt so so proud to be an American!
wishing you a lovely day, Nini!
    xoxo

  57. why?
    July 9th, 2009 at 09:28 | #57

you’re crazy for wearing a black shirt in addition to that ugly black vest on top of it…it’s 100 degrees or more outside. You should be wearing vibrant, colorful summer clothes. where is your fashion senses? you’re the last person on earth that should be given fashion advise/tips. shame on you for thinking that you’re a fashionista!

  58. July 10th, 2009 at 23:13 | #58

    July 16th, 2009 at 02:38 | #60

i have to agree. you have some misses when you try to be too over the top.
this was a miss for me, the fit is bad and somehow the wash is not working for me. also the length of the jeans is too long for the shoes, you could have tucked in it or cuffed them, i dunno. again, its not one of your best looks. we all have those days.

love your later post on the robert rodriguez top and vintage pants though, that was a great outfit.
