DIY Fairy Tutu

July 13th, 2010

This was a last minute task. The party I was invited to was a theme party and the theme was Tutus & Hats.
I could not envision myself wearing a tutu with hat. I put a couple of outfits together but the hat and tutu combo was not happening. So I decided just to stick with the tutu part of the theme. But I really didn’t have anything that jumped out… The one item I was really considering was that fabulous brown Chanel dress that I got for $9.99. It has been on my mannequin for months now. But the dress is still in really bad condition with holes and shredding all over. Any suggestions about what I should do to make it wearable?

So, last minute thoughts….. I decided to do a big tutu and mix the tulle with fabric and grosgrain trims. I decided to leave all the edges raw. I wanted something edgy and de/re-constructed so CDG comes to mind. I’m thinking of a sheer front with a covered back so I can wear boy shorts or bloomers with it.

The back of the skirt is made out of thick wool.

My bruise knee from falling down on my 6″ Fendi :-(  That’s the price of fashion.

Wearing: DIY tutu, AA blommers, F21 lace top, vintage alligator clutch and fox tail, Givenchy booties.

DIY tutu: All you need is 3 yards of tulle and one yard of any regular fabric that you want to mix in. I have hook and eye closures and snaps because it’s easier for me that way. And thanks to Nha Khanh for the fabric and for teaching me some new sewing techniques.
Have fun on your DIY tutu skirts and drop me a line if you have DIY that you want to share! Natalya is working on a new TopTen based on DIY so send your links!!!!
Have a great rest of your week everyone!

    Hi Ni!
I feel bad on your knee, you got a bruise!
But thank God, nothing really serious happened to you
from falling because of 6” heel. It scared me, ha.

Btw, you ladies are looking fabulous all the time.
    You all have pretty faces!

that last photo is really sweet- and so opulent with the red velvet sofa! the bruise looks major. ouch, poor you! :(
one of my fears is falling off my taller shoes. 5 inches is my limit on shoe-height, so far. i usually only fall when wearing flip-flops, seriously…that happened just yesterday- no bruises, though. :)

I am so sorry about your bruise. But you all still look glam! 😉
