NiniTip: Flattering Fit

April 1st, 2010

Wearing: Marni ruffle tunic, Seven highwaisted pencil skirt, F21 cuffs, YSL pumps

My clients always ask me how to get the right fit–from sweaters, coats and jackets to pants and skirts, the way these items fit your silhouette will make or break the outfit. Sometimes, the fashion world gets really excited about a certain trend (Balmain’s strong shoulder, the skinny jean) and everyone rushes to wear it. But not every silhouette is for every body. I recommend wearing the silhouettes that make you feel confident: sometimes finding a timeless silhouette is more practical than chasing trends. I always experiment with trendy silhouettes but I settle on what is right for me.

To find the fit that works for you, you have to be realistic: if you have a body part that you feel insecure about, don’t try to hide it with clothing. Use it to your advantage. For example, I’ve mentioned before that my hips are my biggest fear. If I gain or loose any weight, it all goes directly to my hips. Basically, my hip is the thickest part of my body and my upper body is long.

I’m a huge fan of high waisted bottoms because they show off my problem area by flattering it. High waisted pants, shorts and skirts help elongate my hips and make my body look longer. The silhouette is versatile and sexy yet sophisticated. I love wearing highwaisted skirts or shorts with a voluminous blouse tucked in. It’s a classic look that you can’t go wrong with. If you want to dress down a hightwaisted bottom you always can throw on a loose white tee-shirt and a pair of gladiator sandals or wedges for a great look this Spring. Happy April everyone!!! xoxo Nini Nguyen

Absolutely gorgeous pics and outfit, Nini! LOVE your Marni tunic (I get excited everytime I see you wear it), and totally agree with your tips 😉 Often people will try to hide their flaws instead of accentuating their ‘assets’, to their own detriment…

    Happy Easter!

OMG Dear Nini the first One picture ideally illustrates a certain “Dazzling Freshness” idea, AND I really like the way your skirt’s high-waist shape sounds very “Corporate Mistress” . . . while its “denim effect” subtly tend to “casualize” it !!!
    Stunning Alchemy.

I love your make up, so Spring! I have to agree once you find what style suit you, its like winning the lottery! My tip is to always, always get clothes tailored, nothing looks cheap (even if it is) if it is the perfect fit! x

LOVE the outfit! i love high-waisted skirts because I have such a long back (short legs) that it helps me look proportionate. I still haven’t gotten into wearing high-waisted pants…more worried I’d look pregnant. :)

    You look FAB
