Three Different Ways That I Styled My Strapless Dress

July 29th, 2010 Nini 27 comments

Do you own a classic strapless dress? If you don’t, it’s definitely a staple of any wardrobe and I would definitely say it’s a piece that’s  worth investing in.  It’s a timeless silhouette; easy to accessorize and effortless to wear.  There are a zillion different ways that you can style it to create a different look every time you wear the dress.

My favorite strapless dress is from Dries Van Noten. It is made of silk crepe and has a texture that I can wear year-round. The dress drapes loosely on the body so I can wear it with or without a belt, and the navy blue color is just so subtle that I can wear it during the day or out at night.  Here are three different ways that I styled my strapless dress for three different occasions.

Look #1: Romantic date

To create a sexy and elegant look for a romantic date. I paired the dress with sexy simple black pumps. I cinched in the waist and accessorized it with some big bling to make the simple dress stand out for the night.

Wearing: Dries Van Noten dress, YSL pumps, Janis Savitt necklace, Nhã Khanh belt

Look #2: Day time at the office

For a day time look at work I wore the dress with a shirt underneath it, cinched the waist and put on my comfortable shoes.

Wearing: Dries Van Noten dress, Givenchy booties, tiger vintage belt and Vince white tee.

Look #3: Night time out with the girls

To achieve the modern artsy look for girl’s night out.  I paired the dress with a big tulle tulle skirt over and cinched it in with a big belt.

Wearing: Dries Van Noten dress, Giambattista Valli belt, skirt by me, Christian Louboutin lace up.

Have a fabulous day everyone!! xoxo Nini

Chic Chic in High-Waisted Bloomers

July 23rd, 2010 Nini 32 comments

I love bloomers! I think they’re unique and comfortable to wear during the summer. I do understand that bloomers are not for everyone because they accentuate the hip area that lots of women feel conscious about. With that being said, I believe that it doesn’t matter what you wear, it’s all about the proportion, how you carry it, and how you style it.
Here are some tips how to be chic in bloomers:

* The best way to wear bloomer is to keep it minimal.
* Bloomers look great with something more structured, and simple.
* Be sure to tuck them in, throw on some hardcore accessories such as an alligator bag or fabulous booties. That way you can balance out the girliness  of it.

Wearing: Nhã Khanh bloomers, 80’s vintage lace blouse, YSL pumps, vintage necklace and alligator clutch

DIY Fairy Tutu

July 13th, 2010 Nini 20 comments

This was a last minute task. The party I was invited to was a theme party and the theme was Tutus & Hats.
I could not envision myself wearing a tutu with hat. I put a couple of outfits together but the hat and tutu combo was not happening. So I decided just to stick with the tutu part of the theme. But I really didn’t have anything that jumped out… The one item I was really considering was that fabulous brown Chanel dress that I got for $9.99. It has been on my mannequin for months now. But the dress is still in really bad condition with holes and shredding all over. Any suggestions about what I should do to make it wearable?

So, last minute thoughts….. I decided to do a big tutu and mix the tulle with fabric and grosgrain trims. I decided to leave all the edges raw. I wanted something edgy and de/re-constructed so CDG comes to mind. I’m thinking of a sheer front with a covered back so I can wear boy shorts or bloomers with it.

The back of the skirt is made out of thick wool.

My bruise knee from falling down on my 6″ Fendi :-(   That’s the price of fashion.

Wearing: DIY tutu, AA blommers, F21 lace top, vintage alligator clutch and fox tail, Givenchy booties.

DIY tutu: All you need is 3 yards of tulle and one yard of any regular fabric that you want to mix in. I have hook and eye closures and snaps because it’s easier for me that way. And thanks to Nha Khanh for the fabric and for teaching me some new sewing techniques.
Have fun on your DIY tutu skirts and drop me a line if you have DIY that you want to share! Natalya is working on a new TopTen based on DIY so send your links!!!!
Have a great rest of your week everyone!

Take Me Away

April 18th, 2010 Nini 27 comments

Wearing: Maison Martin Margiela bodysuit, Forever 21 short, vintage cape, and necklaces, Azzedine Alaia shoes.

I hope you all are well. I’m wearing my nude MMM bodysuit and the black F21 shorts again. This time I styled them with my vintage black/white checker cape. This is the second cape I own. I really like the way they lay on the body and how versatile they are.  My closet is not that big and I love to buy things that I can mix and match with what I already own. That way I get every penny’s worth out of my purchases. Finding different ways of mixing your clothes can diversify the closet you already have! My blog is all about sharing my fashion tips. Any reader who uses my tips can see that if you shop wisely, you can save on some things and splurge on others. I learn new fashion tricks every day from you all and I hope that it is mutual. Have a great day everyone!!! xoxo Nini

NiniTip: Flattering Fit

April 1st, 2010 Nini 39 comments

Wearing: Marni ruffle tunic, Seven highwaisted pencil skirt, F21 cuffs, YSL pumps

My clients always ask me how to get the right fit–from sweaters, coats and jackets to pants and skirts, the way these items fit your silhouette will make or break the outfit. Sometimes, the fashion world gets really excited about a certain trend (Balmain’s strong shoulder, the skinny jean) and everyone rushes to wear it. But not every silhouette is for every body. I recommend wearing the silhouettes that make you feel confident: sometimes finding a timeless silhouette is more practical than chasing trends. I always experiment with trendy silhouettes but I settle on what is right for me.

To find the fit that works for you, you have to be realistic: if you have a body part that you feel insecure about, don’t try to hide it with clothing. Use it to your advantage. For example, I’ve mentioned before that my hips are my biggest fear. If I gain or loose any weight, it all goes directly to my hips. Basically, my hip is the thickest part of my body and my upper body is long.

I’m a huge fan of high waisted bottoms because they show off my problem area by flattering it. High waisted pants, shorts and skirts help elongate my hips and make my body look longer. The silhouette is versatile and sexy yet sophisticated. I love wearing highwaisted skirts or shorts with a voluminous blouse tucked in. It’s a classic look that you can’t go wrong with. If you want to dress down a hightwaisted bottom you always can throw on a loose white tee-shirt and a pair of gladiator sandals or wedges for a great look this Spring. Happy April everyone!!! xoxo Nini Nguyen
